Science and Fiction: A Creative Exploration of Real and Fantastic Worlds, is an International conference hosted by the Catalan Society for History of Science and Technology and the Catalan Society for SF and Fantasy. The main goal of the conference is to analyze and discuss the relations between science and fiction (literature, theatre, cinema, arts…), introducing them in the topics of the Catalan academic environment.

Scientific Committee

David Bueno (Universitat de Barcelona), Volker Dehs (Société Jules Verne), Martí Domínguez (Universitat de València), Carme Gregori (Universitat de València), David Jou (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona), Emma Sallent (Universitat de Barcelona), Chris Willmott (University of Leicester).

Topics proposed

  1. Science & Fiction. 2. SF in university academics. 3. SF and genre writing. 4. SF in the international scene. 5. SF outside the books.

Thematic sessions are going to be distributed without taking into account the order expressed above but with the next schedule:

Wednesday 2, morning: Welcome and Inaugural Plenary; communications topic 1. Afternoon: communications topic 2.

Thursday, 3, morning: communications topic 3. Afternoon: communications topic 4 & second Plenary.

Friday, 4, morning: communications topic 5.

Saturday, 5, morning: closing Plenary and closing ceremony.

Communications

Proposals should include an abstract of 200 words, the author’s name, a short CV, and a tentative title. Please submit abstracts via e-mail to inscripcions.CienciaiFiccio@gmail.com by March 31st, 2015.

The official languages of the Conference are English and Romance languages.

Plenaries and Parallel Activities

There are going to be three plenaries. Dr. Laura Borràs, director of the Institució de les Lletres Catalanes is going to present «Lletres i tecnociència» at the first plenary. At the second plenary, Dr. Carme Torras (CSIC-UPC) is going to talk about «Confluència de ciència i ficció en la robòtica actual». At the closing plenary, Dr. Alessandro Scarsella (Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia) will talk about «La fantascienza latina».

Also, there are going to be three exhibitions from the Blbioteca de Catalunya Collection. «Targetes telefòniques de ciència-ficció», by Jean-Pierre Laigle and «Pedrolo i la ciència-ficció» by the Fundació Pedrolo at the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (IEC) in Barcelona. And «Fons de ciència-ficció vuitcentista de la biblioteca» at the BMVB in Vilanova. On Sunday, September 7th is scheduled a tour at l’Espai Pedrolo, in Concabella.

A more detailed program of activities will be published at the appropriate time.

Registration

Communications deadline: March 31st, 2015.

Assistance deadline: September 2nd, 2015.

Registration forms will be available at the website.

Notification of acceptance will begin after April 30th, 2015.

Fees should be paid between May 15th and June 15th. General registration fee: 20 €.

Registrations for lunch and dinner and for the closing lunch in Vilanova i la Geltrú will be open during the conference.

Participants will receive their assistance certification and advantages in the conference materials published.

Important dates

March 31st, 2015: Deadline for communication proposals.

April 30th, 2015: Notifications of acceptance begin.

From May 15th to June 15th, 2015: Registration fee payment.

September 2-5: International Conference Science & Fiction.
